pallet ottoman/coffee table part II

Well I don't remember what part II was so there isn't one! Something new though is that this little creation made me realize how much i love having a large table surface to eat around, work on projects or whatever. So the next step is to make a large coffee table and send this ottoman packing. Stay tuned.....

Pallet Ottoman/Coffee Table Part I of II

Well I have this vision of cloning our rectangular storage ottoman and having 1 big square but until then, I decided it would be fun to have a transition piece that would also be a project/outlet.

The vision: Take a large pallet, put some kind of legs on it, pad it with an old comforter and upholster with fabric that gives the illusion of coral.Tuft surface and use leather buttons to hold tufting. We measured and drilled holes for the tufting buttons but that idea became obsolete once the reality of padding with a comforter set in.

Here I am sanding the harsh edges of the pallet. Why? See "things learned".

Things Learned: pallets have gaps between their planks just wide enough for heels to fall in between and stress the fabric (when padding with a worn out comforter). Cardboard is not strong enough but it's okay. Sanding edges so that the thin comforter won't betray it's marriage with the pallet to sabatoge the user's quest for comfort with it's sharpness.

Cool Byproduct: I got to practice with an electric sander and rounding edges.

Edges sanded and legs attached. The legs are cut up pieces of a big branch/trunk of a tree that has bark that looks similar to camouflage. Yes, when i was dragging the branch around, i did have misgivings about the camouflage look getting along swimmingly with the chosen fabric. I suppressed those feelings in the name of obsession with building this thing. Legs attached with a nail gun (to be cont.).

Floral fabric: comforter. Other fabric: the wannabe coral.
So I stapled these together all around the bottom edge of the pallet and then we trimmed off the excess.
Things Learned: comforters are not foam padding. Tufting idea abandoned at this point.

Not too shabby. Clashing of the legs and fabric aside, it's pretty tight. A lot of little pattern but not a lot of structure lines. Bothersome.

Here it is in our room. I love the bigness more than I ever thought. I could not handle the clashing of patterns in the legs and fabric. However, feeling good.....

So, repainting the legs! Ahhh, what a relief to the eyes and to my nauseous stomach.

Part II coming soon.....
